Scuba Diving Sites Gran Canaria

Here at Puerto Rico Diving we visit a wide range of different dive sites to appeal to all levels of scuba diver. For certified divers Gran Canaria is the perfect year round dive destination. The clarity of water, the warm gulf stream temperatures and the abundant sea life makes Gran Canaria’s scuba diving irresistible.

Playa De Amadores

Our local shore dive site is only 5 minutes away from our dive centre and is a popular dive for Try Dives and PADI Courses. This sheltered beach allows divers to see a wide variety of the amazing marine life we have here in Gran Canaria in calm, clear waters.

The underwater wall is home to many different colour fish such as Parrotfish and Ornate Wrasse. You may see Octopus hiding amongst the rocks or Cuttlefish expertly hovering. Once over the wall, you may spot Stingrays and Angel Sharks camouflaging against the sandy bottom.

Tufia

Tufia is a small, charming town on a hill with houses built into the cliff and a black sand beach. Underwater this sleepy location opens up to a great dive site.

Underwater many caves, crevices and caverns, created by layers of lava, are home to Butterfly Rays, Common Stingrays, Angelsharks, Jewel Anemones, Seahorses and Cuttlefish plus many more species of marine life.This dive site is easily accessible and loved by many of our Puerto Rico Diving family.

El Cabron

The main site of Arinaga offers a rocky platform at 12 metres which drops down to the sandy bottom at a depth of 23 metres. This marine protected area of cliffs, caves, arches and tunnels provides a wonderful setting where you can explore the spectacular underwater world of Gran Canaria.

Here you have the chance to see Angel Sharks, different species of Rays, large Groupers, Barracudas and huge schools of Roncadores covering the sea floor. If you are able it is a special experience to be able to kneel in the middle of these numerous fish and watch them swim around you.

Playa De Cabron

An easy access dive where you can enjoy seeing marine life such as Stingrays, Trumpetfish, Angelsharks, Groupers, Octopus and Cuttlefish.

Walking either from the beach or down the rocks into the water you begin the dive in shallow water, gradually getting deeper.

Here in the well lit waters, with a sandy bottom and rocky habitats you can discover the marvellous Canarian underwater world.

Arches

As the name suggests this dive site allows divers to swim through a series of large arches which have been cut out of the volcanic rocks. Swimming through these impressive arches with the sunlight illuminating the blue water from above is a sight you won’t forget.

Hiding in the shadows of this dive site you can spot huge Groupers, Barracudas and Trumpet fish. On the sandy part of the site at 22 metres Angel Sharks and different types of Rays can be spotted hiding in the sand.

Risco Verde

Risco Verde is located in the town of Arinaga, on the fringe of the Marine Reserve. It is an easy entry from a pebble beach, close to the promenade. This is an ideal dive for those who want a peaceful dive full of marine life.

The dive starts on a rocky platform before going down several steps where you can spot Scorpion Fish, Octopus, Cuttlefish and large numbers of bright blue Damsel Fish. At a depth of 12/14 metres, the reef gives way to a sandy bottom where you can find Stingrays, Barracudas and Angel Sharks

Pasito Blanco

Just a short 5 minute boat journey away from the harbour you will find the dive site Pasito Blanco. One of the most popular boat dive sites on the east coast thanks to the abundance of marine life calling this rocky platform home.

As you descend you will find a platform made up of layers of lava surrounded by a sandy bottom. This rocky platform has many nooks and crannies to explore so make sure you bring a torch. Whilst exploring this reef you may find Moray eels and Octopus hiding in the holes, Roncadores grouping together or Angel Sharks and Butterfly rays camouflaging against the sandy bottom.

Sardina

This dive site is located at the north of the island. It is a little further away but certainly worth the drive and on the way we get to see some of the beautiful island. Sardina is popular with both local divers and visiting divers.

The entry point here is from the harbour, with steps leading down into the water. Underwater there is a huge amount of marine life to be seen including Butterfly Rays, Sting Rays and large shoals of Barracuda glistening from the reflection of the sun.

Biotopos (Artificial Reef)

Built in 1991 by the Canarian Government along with the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Biotopos is a dive site made up of a large number of concrete structures to make an artificial reef. Here you can often see large numbers of Roncadores who bank together creating a curtain of fish to surround you. As you move from structure to structure you may find Stingrays taking a rest, octopus playing hide and seek and if you look up, Baraccuda closer to the surface.
